Bad news for Netflix viewers who use someone else’s password
Top American content streaming service Netflix has announced plans to put in measures to prevent users from sharing accounts or swapping passwords.
In an interview with Newsweek, Netflix Chief Product Officer Greg Peter said that the company is looking for ways to limit password sharing in the platform’s Q3 2019.
Currently, Netflix’s terms and conditions currently state that the service and any content viewed through the service are for your personal and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household.
According to Netflix, usage even on multiple gadgets should be within the same household.
Netflix did not announce any immediate plans on the regulation but said that they are currently monitoring user activity
It will do this by new software that will be able to analyse which users are logged in and where in order to quickly flag shared accounts.
Synamedia Credential Sharing Insight uses behavioural analytics to figure out exactly where and how the account is being used, spotting any potential fraudulent activity.
This includes determining whether the account is being used by a friend or adult children who have moved away from home.
Password sharers may be offered a premium sharing option, giving them a pre-authorized level of password sharing between a pre-determined number of people for a higher cost.
