Besieged Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has been reported to be unwell, days after his seven-day prison remand sentence commenced.
The submission was made on Thursday by Owino’s lawyers who appeared before Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot to represent the lawmaker in an incitement case dating back to 2017, where the MP is accused of subversion and uttering abusive words against President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The submission was part of a plea to explain Owino’s absence from court. Cheruiyot consequently set February 3 as the mention date of the case as he ordered Owino’s treatment at the Industrial Area Remand Prison Hospital.

In the old case, the charge sheet reads that on September 24, 2017, during a public address in Kawangware, Owino uttered words geared towards exciting disaffection to the Presidency. He also faces a second charge in the case, one of inciting the public into violence by making pronouncements calculated to cause mass disobedience to lawful authority.
