Kenyan drivers have been issued with a directive by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), to promptly apply for the issuance of the new-look smart driving license before July this year to evade the penalties prescribed.
This is one part of the reforms that the authority seeks to undertake, and one that was announced during last week’s high-stake security meeting in Mombasa, being an effort to restore sanity in the country’s transport sector. The resolve was announced by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i who said that instant fines will be meted on those who will not have complied by July 1st.
“The issuance of manual driving licenses will be suspended by July 1. We are going to start trials on instant fines immediately and by July 1, we will go fully on the issue of fines as we cease issuing manual driving licences. We are migrating to digital and that’s the way forward,” affirmed Dr. Matiang’i.

NTSA has also reached out to motorists who have already tendered their applications of the smart license to collect them at NTSA offices in Nairobi. The new license goes for KES 3,050 with a validity of three years.
