The Hague-based International Criminal Court has dismissed as “speculation” concerns Deputy President William Ruto raised during an interview with a local media station, saying that he was aware of a scheme to revive his 2007/2008 post-election violence case at the court.
During the interview on NTV on Thursday, Ruto revealed to his viewers that there was a cabal he was aware of that was doing everything possible to lock him out of succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta when the latter’s term expires in 2022.
“As of last year, I was having a discussion with the Director-General of NIS (National Intelligence Service), Philip Kameru, and I learned that there are people here who are ready to come and open the ICC cases,” the Deputy President revealed.

Operatives at the ICC Prosecutor’s office were however quick to distance their office from the discussion, saying they could not be dragged into the allegations.

“The Office of the Prosecutor cannot comment on speculation,” read part of the statement sent to newsrooms. The statement, however, stressed the fact that the door was still open and that there was possibility of the case being re-opened should new evidence resurface.
