Strapped Gor Mahia risk missing out on CAF tournament

Kenyan football powerhouse Gor Mahia FC are facing a new cash challenge as they hope to progress to the group stage of the CAF Champions League.

K’ogallo who are set to travel to Algeria to face USM Algers may not honour the fixture if their money issues are not settled fast. The match is scheduled for Sunday, September 15.

Gor chairman Mr Ambrose Rachier revealed to Goal.com that despite convening a fundraiser on Tuesday nothing much came out of it.

“We have not raised sufficient money for hotel accommodation in Algiers,” said Rachier.

“We did not raise good money as most of our guests did not turn up for the reasons we are unable to explain but those who attended managed to raise a paltry amount which is not sufficient at all,” he added.

However, Rachier remained hopeful that some of the pledges made during the fund drive will be honoured.

“It is very difficult to reveal the amount raised as at now because we have pledges, we have post-dated cheques and it makes it difficult to confirm the exact amount of money we have now,” he said.

This is not the first time that Gor Mahia has been on bended knees owing to the financial crisis at the oldest football club in Kenya.

Last season many attributed Gor’s poor progression in CAF Confederation cup to poor planning that was due to lack of funds.
