Ndindi Nyoro keeps off parliament as Gachagua is impeached by the National Assembly

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is currently fighting for his political future after the National Assembly overwhelmingly resolved to impeach him.

MPs voted to remove him from office after being swayed by 11 charges presented by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse.

Missing in action, however, was influential legislator Ndindi Nyoro who is a known political rival of Rigathi Gachagua.

As one of President Ruto’s key allies, Nyoro’s absence surprised many who anticipated he would support the motion aimed at removing his opponent from the scene.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also did not show up, raising speculations on why the two skipped the historic session in parliament.

While some argue that his absence was due to cowardice, others contend that it was a strategic decision, especially from Nyoro’s perspective.

Why Ndindi Nyoro boycotted Gachagua’s impeachment proceedings

Ndindi Nyoro is an experienced politician and lawmaker who has steadily increased his influence in his Mt. Kenya backyard.

Since the 2022 general election and throughout the first two years of the Kenya Kwanza administration, his political fortunes have significantly improved, largely due to his close ties with President Ruto.

His keen political mobilization skills, public speaking abilities, and brilliance in economic matters enhance his political profile, with some suggesting he is rapidly positioning himself as a key political figure in Mt. Kenya.

Nyoro’s ambitions put him at loggerheads with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who also comes from the region and was also eyeing the prestigious Kingpin’s status formerly occupied by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

News on Gachagua’s impeachment and imminent removal from office has reportedly complicated Nyoro’s schemes to the top of Mt. Kenya politics.

The Deputy President has gained sympathy among a section of the mountain’s residents, especially in his Nyeri backyard.

With the impeachment seemingly taking a tribal angle, MPs from Central Kenya risk being targeted for bringing down the region’s senior leader, popular as Riggy G.

Mathira and other parts of the DP’s home county of Nyeri have witnessed sporadic incidents of rage as infuriated supporters criticize Ruto for betraying their leader.

A section of political enthusiasts believe that Ndindi Nyoro kept off the impeachment to preserve his standing with Mt. Kenya’s voters.

The Kiharu MP is reportedly distancing himself from uncontrolled political mudslinging as demonstrated during the impeachment hearing, while strategizing to elevate his profile to the national stage.

Nyoro is among the leaders from the region who have been touted as replacements for the Office of the Deputy President. Other senior politicians on the list include Kirinyaga governor Ann Waiguru and Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki.
