Major retailers, matatus, petrol stations reject old Sh1,000 notes ahead of September 30, deadline
Kenyans still owning the old Sh1,000 note may find themselves locked out with the legal tender that is to be phased after September, 30, 2019 as early as today.
Despite the deadline being end of September, a spot check into major retailers, matatus, banks, petrol stations and telecoms has revealed that most of them are currently not acepting the Sh1,000 note as from September 26.
In their defence the business community said they are shying from the old notes because they may not find enough time to exchange so the deadline could caytch up with them.
“That note has already lost value in our view and we are no longer taking it,” said James Kiarie, a matatu tout with Lopha Sacco.
