List of African Countries Not Members of AU
African Union (AU) is an organization that brings together all 55 countries in Africa.
It was founded as the Organization of African Unity on 25th May 1963 after close workings by Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and Haile Sellasie of Ethiopia.
The African Union has been discharging its mandate which includes;

- Ensuring peace and security, as well as conflict resolution.
- Energy, infrastructure, and Agriculture Development.
- Visa Free Africa

The following countries/territories, however, miss out on the AU list;
 The Republic of Somaliland

- Up to May 1991, Somaliland was part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
- Today, Somaliland is a self-declared independent state with a functioning government, law and order.
- Somaliland’s breakaway followed the protracted civil war and instability in the 1980s.
- After a lengthy war, the Somali National Movement secure Somaliland and declared it independent.
- The movement passed a unilateral decision that the Federal Government of Somalia was no longer tenable.
- The catastrophic secessionist war was fought hard by Siad Barre’s government which culminated in thousands of deaths.
- Muse Bihi Abdi was elected Somaliland president in November 2017, succeeding Ahmed Silanyo.
- Somaliland in 2016 celebrated 25 years of self-declared independence, but it remains unrecognized internationally.
- This is the obstacle to Somaliland’s admission into the African Union.
