How to make Kaimati or Sweet dumplings

Schools are opening and I know most of us parents are already panicking on what snacks to pack for our kids or even give them for breakfast besides the usual bread and cereals. Let me share an easy to make and filling snack; Kaimati.

Kaimatis are a delicacy from the coast. They are coated with sugar syrup. They are very popular with children but anyone can have them. Serve them for breakfast for your family; you can pack them for your school going kids, for picnics or even for 4 o’clock tea when your kids come back from school.

It’s an easy to make snack and the great thing is you can make it early morning for your breakfast or just when you want to take it unlike other snacks that you have to prepare in advance. You can even teach your kids to make them.

2 cups All-purpose flour

2 teaspoon instant yeast

1 tablespoon cooking oil/butter/Ghee

250ml plain yogurt

1 cup warm water

Half litre cooking oil for deep frying

  1. Mix all the dry ingredients and mix well
  2. Add a tablespoon of oil to the dry ingredients
  3. Add the yoghurt and warm water and mix them all. The consistency to be achieved should be a bit heavy but can drop.
  4. Cover the mixture and set aside for about 20 minutes.
  5. After 20 minutes, heat oil in a deep frying pan. Wash your hands and scoop a handful mixture then squeeze a sizeable amount out between your index finger and thumb. This is the trick to getting round shaped Kaimatis. Repeat till you are done. Set aside and mix with the syrup till all the Kaimatis have the syrup on.

So let’s learn how to make the syrup.

I cup sugar

1 cup water

Bring the two to boil and let it boil till the consistency is heavy. Almost like honey. Set aside to cool.

Serve your Kaimati with hot tea, fresh cold juice or a cup of coffee.

So go ahead and treat your family to this sweet snack. I guarantee you that it will be all smiles.
