An attack suspected to have been staged by the Boko Haram jihadist group on Monday has seen six Chadian soldiers killed and ten others seriously injured. The attack that was pulled out around the eruptive Lake Chad region is reported to have taken the officers by surprise, partly explaining the significant number of casualties.

“Our forces were looking for Boko Haram elements when they were ambushed around Mandrari, a place with lots of tall grass,” an army official speaking on condition of anonymity told AFP.

Jihadist attacks have become frequent in recent months and especially around Lake Chad, a basin area that borders Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria. On January 20, a suicide bomber staged a homicide that killed nine people in Kaiga village near the lake.

Initially, Boko Haram operated exclusively in Nigeria, but has ever since expanded their deadly missions to the neighboring countries. The attacks have gone a long way in polarizing the lake region, which is considered one of the poorest areas on earth.
