The United States of America President Donald J Trump has been impeached by the House of Representatives in a near party-line vote on Wednesday.
However, despite the House exercising their constitutional right to indict Trump on abuse of power and obstructing the Congress. Trump is still the President of the United States of America.
This means that there are more steps to be followed after the events of Wednesday night.
Here are the next steps
Selection of impeachment managers
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi must now ensure she creates the ‘impeachment managers’ team that will make the case against the president in a Senate trial in January 2020.
Referral of impeachment to the Senate
The transfer of impeachment from the House to the Senate is expected to happen in short order. But with Democrats mostly arguing that the impeachment case is urgent in order to stop Trump from striking again, stalling on the transfer could be difficult to justify.
The Senate trial (and likely acquittal)
Eventually, the Senate will have to host a trial next month and this trial will either convict Trump or exit him from office. A two-thirds majority of senators would be required to remove Trump from office.
