Not guilty – Babu denies committing crime

Embakasi East legislator Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has this morning been arraigned in court where he was charged with attempted murder. In the case, the youthful MP is accused of opening fire in a night club located in Nairobi and shooting a Nairobi DJ identified as Felix Orinda alias DJ Evolve following an argument. Babu also faced a second charge of being drunk and disorderly while armed.

The lawmaker has however pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The first charge of unlawful attempt to cause death commonly referred to as ‘accessory after the fact to murder’ attracts life imprisonment. “Any person who becomes an accessory after the fact to murder is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life,” States Section 222 of the Penal Code.

The second charge, which offends sections 33 and 31 (1) of the Firearms Act, attracts an imprisonment sentence of a term not exceeding one year, a fine not exceeding KES 10,000 or both.

In a short CCTV footage clip circulating on social platforms, a man believed to be Babu Owino is seen pulling out his pistol before pumping a bullet into the said victim.
