Big win for CBK as court rules on Jomo Kenyatta image on new currency
Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) can now rest easy after the High Court ruled in their favour in the matter regarding the image of founding president Jomo Kenyatta on the new Sh1,000 note.
The matter had sparked controversy in the public with legal minds like Lawyer Otiende Amollo claiming the inclusion of Jomo in the notes contravenes the constitution.
“Have seen the new notes unveiled. I’m personally persuaded they’re contrary to A. 231(4) of the Constitution, to the extent that they bear the image and portrait of the founding President. Are we short of images that depict Kenya,” said Amollo.
However, the High Court ruled that the image of Jomo Kenyatta on the new notes is not a portrait but a statue which is part of the KICC.
The case was filed by activist Okiya Omtatah.
