Girls at Starehe school suffered hysteria, medical results reveal

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has stated that students at The Starehe Girls Center, suffered a case of mass hysteria.

In a statement on Friday, the ministry said two cases of rhinovirus were also recorded. Rhinovirus is the predominant cause of the common cold.

“The team drew a conclusion of mass psychogenic illness also called mass hysteria,” MoH said.

So far Ministry of Health has dispatched specialists from Mathari Mental Hospital to Starehe Girls centre to conduct a psychological assessment of the affected students.

As of October , 2, 2019 68 students were reported to be affected.

The ministry has also recommended the need for therapists, caregiver at the school.

“There is a need for continuous counselling of the students, sensitisation and awareness creation on mental health and self-care to avert possible future occurrence,” added MoH.
