The people of Mwiki and Kasarani can now smile again after the government heard their cries and released Sh300 for the reconstruction of the impassable road.
The breakthrough came in days after locals in the area engage the police officers in running battle and barricaded roads forcing commuters to walk to Thika Road to access vehicles entering the Nairobi Central Business District.
Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja and Kenyan Urban Roads Authority Acting MD Silas Kinoti held a lengthy meeting on Thursday that led to the resolution.
The Sh300 million is part of the Sh1.7 million set aside by the government to repair 13 kilometres of road.
Sakaja confirmed that the process of reconstructing the road has already begun.
“We have already sent a team and the machinery to Mwiki to make the road passage for now as we prepare for full work,” Sakaja said.
This is not the first time the Mwiki-Kasarani road is being recarpeted, former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero pumped Sh500 million on the road, and his successor Mike Sonko also did the same but not much changed.
